Ancestry is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer Co-op to join the Machine Learning Engineering team for the Summer 2027 term. This role focuses on developing, deploying, and optimizing machine learning and large language models (LLMs) to improve customer experiences and internal workflows. You will collaborate with data scientists and engineers to build scalable ML solutions and intelligent AI-driven agents.
What you'll do#
- Develop and deploy machine learning and large language models.
- Build and optimize AI agents to enhance automation and decision-making.
- Optimize model inference speed, storage efficiency, and scalability for real-world applications.
- Develop pipelines and MLOps workflows to streamline model training, evaluation, and deployment.
- Contribute to platforms for ML, LLM, and agent evaluation and monitoring.
- Experiment with emerging ML, LLM, and agent technologies.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing an advanced degree (Master's or PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Linguistics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
- Proficiency in Python and familiarity with ML libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn.
- Experience with GenAI, LLMs, and agentic frameworks like LangChain or AutoGen.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to write clean, efficient, and scalable code.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with cloud platforms and ML development and deployment tools.
- Familiarity with Node.js or Java, LLM fine-tuning, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vector databases, and reinforcement learning techniques is a plus.

- This is a remote, part-time, work-study position based in the United States.
