About the role#
Americans United for Separation of Church and State is seeking full-time summer legal interns to support our work on First Amendment protections and civil rights litigation. This internship provides substantive legal experience and exposure to constitutional issues in federal and state courts. Interns gain practical training for public-interest legal practice through work on ongoing cases and potential new litigation.
What you'll do#
- Conduct legal and factual research to support active litigation.
- Draft demand letters to address constitutional violations.
- Analyze potential new litigation matters.
- Draft pleadings, briefs, and discovery documents.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a law student in any year of study.
- A strong commitment to advancing the public interest.
- A commitment to the separation of religion and government.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough legal and factual research.
- Strong writing skills.

- Term: Summer 2027.
- Work Modality: This position is remote, with potential opportunities to work in person at our Washington, D.C. office.
- Compensation: A stipend of $7,360 for a ten-week term.
