The State Supreme Court Initiative (SSCI) is seeking candidates for a sponsored fellowship, such as Equal Justice Works or other public interest fellowships, beginning in the fall of 2027. This opportunity is open to rising third-year law students and recent law graduates for a term of one to two years. The fellow will focus on identifying and briefing cases of constitutional importance in state supreme courts and other state courts to expand access to justice and protect state constitutional rights.
What you'll do#
- Conduct legal research and analysis to develop theories for new litigation projects.
- Draft legal memoranda, briefs, motions, and other legal pleadings.
- Develop research, template arguments, and resources to support the work of the ACLU and its affiliates.
- Draft and edit public education and non-litigation advocacy materials.
- Provide support to ACLU affiliates and cooperating attorneys.
- Engage in public speaking and attend relevant meetings or conferences.
What you'll need#
- A J.D. or an expected J.D. by the spring of 2027.
- A demonstrated commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, criminal justice, and racial justice.
- Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct complex legal analysis and fact-finding.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Willingness to work closely with the SSCI throughout the fellowship funding application process.
- Admission to practice in NY or DC is preferred; if not currently admitted, agreement to become admitted within one year of hire for two-year fellows is required.
Location & details#
- Locations: New York, NY and Washington, DC.
- Modality: Hybrid, with in-office requirements of two days per week or eight days per month.
- Status: Full-time, paid position.
- Representation: This role is part of a collective bargaining unit represented by ACLU Staff United.
