The Abortion Criminal Defense Initiative (ACDI) is seeking applicants for a sponsored fellowship, such as Equal Justice Works, beginning in the fall of 2027. This fellowship is designed for rising third-year law students or recent law graduates to work with the ACLU for up to two years. The fellow will be a fully integrated member of the team, focusing on supporting network defense counsel and implementing advocacy strategies to address the criminalization of abortion care.
What you'll do#
- Provide legal research, writing, and support for criminal defense attorneys representing individuals facing abortion-related prosecutions.
- Track abortion-related prosecutions and legal developments to identify trends and advocacy opportunities.
- Assist in the design, planning, and execution of ACDI trainings and educational efforts.
- Draft and edit public education and non-litigation advocacy materials.
- Identify opportunities for amicus advocacy and affirmative litigation strategies.
- Engage in public speaking, attend meetings, and participate in conferences as needed.
- Collaborate across ACLU projects and state affiliates to coordinate defense support.
What you'll need#
- A J.D. or expected receipt of a J.D. by the spring of 2027.
- Admission to practice in New York or the District of Columbia, or an agreement to become admitted within one year of hire.
- A demonstrated commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, criminal justice, and racial justice.
- Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to conduct complex legal analysis and fact-finding.
- Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Willingness to work closely with the ACDI through the fellowship funding application process.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid fellowship.
- The role is hybrid, requiring two days per week or eight days per month in either the New York, NY, or Washington, D.C. office.
- Priority consideration will be given to applications submitted by June 26, 2026.
