The ACLU is seeking an undergraduate intern for the Communications and Marketing Department. This part-time, 12-week internship focuses on earned media and communications strategy, supporting advocacy and litigation efforts across issues such as free speech, immigrants' rights, reproductive rights, and criminal justice reform. Interns must be based in the U.S. and the position must be tied to a formal education program via integrated coursework or academic credit.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to daily communications department operations, including drafting internal and external materials such as press releases, talking points, social media posts, blogs, and media advisories.
- Research and build lists of key reporters, editors, producers, and bookers to support media outreach.
- Craft and distribute pitches to news media regarding ACLU campaigns and projects.
- Monitor news trends and track press clips.
- Conduct research projects to inform multi-faceted communications plans, including audience targeting and messaging strategies.
What you'll need#
- Completion of at least the first year of an undergraduate degree in communications, public relations, journalism, political science, or a related field.
- At least one semester of internship or work experience in journalism, public relations, or communications.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a strong preference for experience drafting digital content or press materials.
- Familiarity with news media, online platforms, and current media trends.
- Familiarity with Associated Press style or media relations software like Cision or Meltwater is a plus.
- Commitment to the mission of the ACLU and the principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Location & details#
- Location: Remote or hybrid (Washington D.C. or New York City).
- Term: Fall 2026 (12 weeks).
- Schedule: Part-time (10, 15, or 20 hours per week).
- Compensation: Paid position at $20/hour.
- Eligibility: Must be a currently matriculated undergraduate student authorized to work in the U.S.
