The Voting Rights Project at the ACLU offers a legal internship for students to support litigation and advocacy efforts aimed at building an accessible, inclusive, and equitable democracy. This program provides experience in high-impact cases, including challenges to redistricting plans, voter suppression, and restrictive voting legislation. This is an unpaid internship for course credit only.
What you'll do#
- Conduct legal research and analysis to support new and active litigation projects.
- Assist in drafting legal memoranda, pleadings, affidavits, motions, and briefs.
- Draft and edit public education and non-litigation advocacy materials.
- Provide support and assistance to ACLU affiliates and cooperating attorneys.
- Collaborate with the team on client outreach, discovery, and trial practice tasks.
What you'll need#
- Completion of 1L year of law school by spring 2026 or current enrollment in an LLM program.
- Excellent research skills, including proficiency with internet and legal databases.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- High attention to detail with effective organizational and time-management abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Location & details#
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Modality: Hybrid or remote, based in New York City or Washington D.C.
- Compensation: Unpaid; must be tied to academic credit or integrated coursework.
- Eligibility: Applicants must be matriculated law students based in the U.S. for the duration of the internship.
