The State Supreme Court Initiative (SSCI) is seeking a legal intern for the Fall 2026 term. This initiative focuses on strengthening the ACLU’s presence in state supreme courts by identifying cases of constitutional importance, filing amicus curiae briefs, and facilitating strategic collaboration among state affiliates. This position is for course credit only and requires the intern to be based in the U.S. for the duration of the program.
What you'll do#
- Draft memoranda, motions, and portions of legal briefs.
- Conduct legal and factual research using databases such as Westlaw and PACER.
- Track cases and emerging issues relevant to the SSCI.
- Embed principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging into all program development and policy work.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a U.S. law school, with at least one year of study completed.
- Excellent research and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management capabilities.
- A commitment to the mission of the ACLU and working collaboratively in a diverse environment.
Location & details#
- Term: Fall 2026 (12 consecutive weeks).
- Modality: Remote or hybrid, based in New York City or Washington D.C.
- Time Commitment: Part-time (10, 15, or 20 hours per week).
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship for course credit only.
