The ACLU is seeking a legal intern for the Human Rights Program in New York City. This position focuses on holding the U.S. government accountable to international human rights obligations through domestic and international advocacy. Interns work under the supervision of the Program Director and collaborate with staff on various legal and policy initiatives.
What you'll do#
- Conduct legal and policy research.
- Draft memoranda, affidavits, and briefs.
- Research prospects for new litigation, including factual and legal claims.
- Research and draft materials for public education and human rights documentation.
- Research and draft materials for advocacy before regional and international bodies.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a law student (must have completed the first semester before the start date).
- Strong interest in protecting and expanding civil and human rights.
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in web-based research and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of the human rights framework is a plus.
- Experience with immigration or criminal legal system issues is a plus.
Location & details#
- Location: New York, New York (Hybrid).
- Term: Fall 2026 (12 consecutive weeks).
- Schedule: Part-time (10, 15, or 20 hours per week).
- Start dates: September 8 or September 21, 2026.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid position for course credit only; it must be tied to the intern's formal education program.
