The ACLU is seeking a Graduate or Legal Intern for the Justice Policy & Government Affairs team within the National Political Advocacy Department. This part-time, remote internship supports the organization's efforts to advance civil liberties and civil rights at the federal, state, and local levels. The position requires a 12-week commitment of 10, 15, or 20 hours per week, starting on either September 8th or September 21st, 2026.
What you'll do#
- Conduct legal and policy research and analysis focused on criminal justice issues.
- Monitor legislative developments across states to identify advocacy opportunities.
- Draft advocacy materials, public education content, toolkits, model policies, and memoranda.
- Assist in coordinating briefings for government officials and drafting testimony on pending legislation.
- Manage projects and coordinate strategy across ACLU departments, affiliates, and coalition partners.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a law or graduate degree program.
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, ending mass incarceration, and challenging racism in the criminal legal system.
- Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to conduct complex analysis and manage multiple tasks independently.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
Location & details#
- Location: Remote (based in the United States).
- Compensation: Paid at a rate of $24 per hour.
- Requirements: This position must be tied to a formal education program through integrated coursework or academic credit. Applicants must be lawfully authorized to work in the United States.
