30th Street Animal Hospital offers a flexible externship and preceptorship program for veterinary students. This program is designed to provide practical, hands-on experience in a contemporary small animal practice to help prepare students for the transition to professional practice. Rotations typically last two to three weeks, though flexible scheduling from two to eight weeks is available to accommodate college curricula. Participants will work under the supervision of a mentor doctor and receive a stipend of $250 per week.
What you'll do#
Externs participate in the daily caseload of a small animal practice, working alongside the veterinary team in all aspects of patient care. Responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories and performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrubbing into surgeries and assisting in the management of medical cases.
- Providing wellness care.
- Developing client communication skills and technical abilities.
- Producing accurate medical records (SOAPs) within the time constraints of a busy practice.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Current professional liability insurance.
- A professional demeanor and adherence to the ethical standards of the practice.
