- One language deeply (Python, Java, or JavaScript)
- Data structures and algorithms
- Git and pull-request workflow
- Debugging and reading unfamiliar code
- Basic web or mobile fundamentals
How to stand out without experience
- Ship two or three real projects with public repos and a short write-up of the hard parts
- Contribute a merged fix to an open-source project you actually use
- Practice timed coding problems weekly instead of cramming the month before
What the interviews test
Expect one or two rounds of data-structures coding plus a behavioral round. Practice talking through your approach out loud while you code; interviewers grade the reasoning, not just the answer.
When to apply: the summer 2027 cycle
Big programs open applications around August–November 2026; healthcare, media, and startups keep posting into spring 2027. Roles start May–June 2027. Applying inside the first days of a posting matters more than a perfect resume submitted late, so check the freshest roles first.
