Political Intern

About the role#

The Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club is seeking Political Interns to support candidates for public office who have received a Sierra Club endorsement. This internship provides hands-on experience in political and campaign organizing, offering training in the fundamentals of electoral work and the impact of public policy on environmental issues. Interns will work 10-20 hours per week for a 4-month duration.

What you'll do#

• Support political and electoral organizing efforts for endorsed candidates, including canvassing, phone banking, and volunteer recruitment.
• Assist with communications and media outreach, such as drafting press materials, coordinating press conferences, and supporting social media content.
• Conduct research on policy, political, and campaign topics related to environmental issues in Michigan.
• Provide operational and administrative support, including data entry, event coordination, and office tasks.
• Collaborate with campaign staff, volunteers, and partner organizations to mobilize supporters.

What you'll need#

• An interest in politics, public policy, community organizing, or environmental advocacy.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work independently.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and X/Twitter).
• A commitment to environmental justice and inclusive democratic participation.
• Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and adapt to changing campaign priorities.
• Willingness to participate in field activities and occasional evening or weekend events.
• Preferred majors include Political Science, Environmental Engineering, Public Health, Communications, Sociology, or Business Administration.

Location & details#

• Location: Hybrid within Detroit, Michigan.
• Commitment: Part-time, 10-20 hours per week.
• Status: Paid internship.
