Intern - Assessment & Referral Clinician

About the role#

The Assessment & Referral Clinician Intern will work within the Psychiatric Urgent Care Center to provide triage, assessment, and referral services. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the clinical intake process and assist in determining appropriate levels of care for patients in crisis. This position is unpaid and requires a commitment of 20 hours per week.

What you'll do#

• Conduct face-to-face and telephone consultations with patients experiencing psychiatric emergencies to assess their clinical condition.
• Handle crisis calls professionally and calmly to determine necessary next steps.
• Coordinate patient admissions and intakes, including managing authorizations with insurance and managed care companies.
• Refer patients to appropriate outpatient services within or outside the system.
• Ensure accurate and timely documentation of assessment information in medical records.
• Collaborate with community agencies and internal teams to support patient needs and ensure a positive experience.
• Participate in departmental meetings and maintain required programmatic training.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an accredited Master’s Level Psychology or Social Work program.
• Ability to respond to a wide range of client needs using differential diagnoses and treatment approaches.
• Understanding of sound ethical practices aligned with your specific training, discipline, and education level.
• Strong organizational skills to manage responsibilities and meet deadlines.
• Enthusiasm for the program and a commitment to providing excellent customer service.

• Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan.
• Work Modality: On-site.
• Schedule: This is a full-time internship (20 hours per week) on the first shift. As the contact center operates 24/7, availability for evening and weekend shifts may be required.
