The Section 106 Intern supports the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) in fulfilling responsibilities under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. This paid internship provides hands-on experience in cultural resource management, tribal sovereignty, and federal consultation protocols. You will gain practical skills in professional writing, records management, and the stewardship of Indigenous heritage.
What you'll do#
- Assist with Section 106 reviews for federal undertakings.
- Conduct background research on proposed projects, including reviewing maps, cultural resource reports, and archival materials.
- Prepare correspondence, comments, and consultation letters for federal agencies and consulting parties.
- Attend meetings with agencies and institutions on behalf of the THPO office.
- Support historic preservation outreach, education, website updates, and newsletter production.
- Assist with community-informed research and the handling of culturally sensitive data.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate or graduate student in anthropology, architecture, history, industrial design, archaeology, Indigenous/Native American studies, historic preservation, or museum studies.
- Interest in Indigenous heritage protection, tribal sovereignty, and cultural resource management.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- A valid driver’s license and insurance.
- Basic familiarity with Section 106, NAGPRA, or federal environmental review processes is a plus, as is experience with GIS, archival research, or database management.

- Schedule: Full-time.
- Compensation: $20.00 per hour.
- Term: Rolling.
- Note: The position requires the ability to lift or carry up to 50 pounds and perform occasional outdoor work at various tribal sites. Candidates must pass a drug test and background check.
