About the role#
The Patient Care Extern is a temporary position for nursing students to gain hands-on experience delivering quality patient care. You will work under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse to assist with common nursing functions and daily care activities in various clinical areas.
What you'll do#
- Observe and assist with direct and indirect patient care through the nursing process, including medication administration and invasive procedures performed by Registered Nurses.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, personal care, and emotional support.
- Monitor patient condition levels and report changes to the appropriate team members.
- Perform patient care services, collect specimens for diagnostic testing, and prepare patients for procedures or surgery.
- Maintain patient data, records, and unit inventory while ensuring equipment is in proper working order.
- Communicate patient and family health care needs to the appropriate providers.
- Assist with patient transfers and discharges while maintaining a safe environment.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited school of nursing with completion of basic medical/surgical nursing coursework.
- Must be within 12 months of graduation.
- A minimum GPA of 2.5.
- High School diploma or GED.
