The Chaplain Intern role is part of the Houston Methodist accredited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program. Interns participate in classroom education and individual supervised learning, receiving mentorship from senior chaplains to provide spiritual, religious, and emotional support to patients, families, and employees.
What you'll do#
- Provide spiritual care support to employees, patients, and visitors.
- Collaborate with the interprofessional patient care team, including participation in health team rounds and discharge planning.
- Provide crisis intervention for patients, visitors, and employees.
- Accurately and thoroughly document patient visits and spiritual care provided in patient records.
- Assist in the initial screening and assessment of patients and the development of care plans.
- Prepare reports and summaries to comply with CPE program requirements.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university.
- One year of membership in a faith or belief group.
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers.
- Basic computer knowledge for maintaining patient documentation.
- A bachelor’s degree or graduate-level theological degree from an accredited school is preferred.
- Preferred majors include Philosophy, Psychology, Nursing, or Public Health.

- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Part-time or summer term with a rolling application process.
- Role Type: Non-exempt, unpaid internship.
- Requirements: May require travel within the Houston metropolitan area and on-call availability during emergencies.
