The AI for Biology & Translation (AIBT) department is seeking an intern to work at the intersection of artificial intelligence and translational genomics. This role focuses on developing and refining large-scale, cross-species foundational AI models to better understand complex disease mechanisms and accelerate drug discovery. You will work on-site in South San Francisco during the Summer or Fall of 2026.
What you'll do#
- Benchmark and refine large-scale foundational AI/ML models, such as transformer-based architectures, for cross-species cell-type and gene program alignment.
- Use machine learning to identify conserved versus species-specific cellular responses and map clinical patient phenotypes to preclinical models.
- Collaborate with AI scientists, computational biologists, and disease-area experts to interpret research results.
- Develop, document, and package clean, reproducible pipelines and code.
- Summarize findings and present recommendations through oral and poster presentations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Master's or PhD program in Data Science, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Statistics, or Biomedical Sciences.
- A strong theoretical and practical foundation in machine learning and deep learning workflows.
- Proficiency in Python and familiarity with machine learning frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Prior hands-on experience handling and analyzing single-cell genomics data.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

- Location: South San Francisco, California (On-site).
- Term: Summer 2026 or Fall 2026.
- Status: Full-time (40 hours per week), 12-week internship.
- Compensation: Paid position ($40.00–$50.00 per hour) with paid holiday time off.
