Engineering Professional Co-Op/Intern (Summer 2026)

About the role#

FirstEnergy is seeking Engineering Co-Ops for the Summer 2026 term. This full-time, on-site position provides students with hands-on experience in the Power Delivery and Construction & Design Services groups. Participants will engage in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, which includes a personalized development plan, on-the-job training, and exposure to utility-scale projects. Interns are expected to work full-time during regular business hours.

What you'll do#

• Support engineers in maintaining engineering programs, including revising procedures, performing analytics, and conducting field walk downs.
• Assist with engineering studies, analysis, and design related to transmission system planning, protection, operations, and maintenance.
• Develop summary reports and presentations to communicate engineering analysis, results, and recommendations.
• Collaborate with Project Managers to implement components of the transmission capital project portfolio.
• Provide analytical and technical support for the development of the 5-year capital project portfolio.
• Participate in mandatory program events, engage in self-assessments, and present project contributions to leadership.

What you'll need#

• Enrollment in a four-year accredited degree program in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.
• Minimum of sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate level class standing is strongly preferred.
• Successful completion of basic engineering coursework.
• Ability to work in both office and field environments while adhering to safety procedures.
• Must be able to work without sponsorship now or in the future.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work independently or in a team.

• Term: Summer 2026 (May 18, 2026 – August 21, 2026).
• Modality: On-site.
• Compensation: $20.00–$30.00 per hour.
