About the role#
The City of Aurora offers unpaid internship opportunities across various municipal departments during the Fall 2026 term. This program provides students with practical experience in local government, offering insight into public service and administration while allowing participants to work directly with city officials and professionals.
What you'll do#
- Work alongside city officials and professionals in various departments, including Community Services, Engineering, Information Technology, the Mayor’s Office, and Emergency Management.
- Contribute to city initiatives, local policies, programs, and community events.
- Participate in departmental operations based on specific project timelines and needs.
- Gain professional insight into the functions of public administration.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an Associates, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree program, or graduation within the previous six months.
- Majors considered include Political Science, Public Health, Business Administration, Communications, Sociology, Urban Planning, Criminal Justice, and Human Resources.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Strong communication skills to interact effectively with diverse community members.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is considered an asset.

- Location: Aurora, Illinois.
- Modality: On-site.
- Term: Fall 2026 (late August/early September through December).
- Commitment: 10–40 hours per week for 10–15 weeks, with schedules varying based on departmental needs.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship; academic credit may be available.
