The Jim Welch Newsroom Internship Program at VTDigger offers early-career journalists the opportunity to participate in a general assignment reporting role. This is a paid, on-site position based in Montpelier, Vermont. VTDigger accepts applications on a rolling basis for three distinct periods: Spring (January–May), Summer (June–August), and Fall (September–December).
What you'll do#
- Produce clear, concise stories on breaking news and enterprise projects that reflect all credible sides of an issue.
- Communicate clearly, respectfully, and proactively with sources, editors, photographers, and other reporters.
- Cultivate news sources to support future coverage.
- Participate in news meetings to exchange information and support team collaboration.
- Use data, public records requests, and narrative storytelling to enrich reporting.
- Apply multimedia skills, including audio and video, to coverage when possible.
- Maintain accuracy and promptly alert editors if a correction or clarification is necessary.
- Engage in an active learning process with editors and mentors.
What you'll need#
- Status as an early-career journalist.
- Ability to produce clear, concise news stories.
- Proficiency in effective communication with sources and colleagues.
- Experience or interest in news coverage using data and narrative storytelling.
- A commitment to active engagement and learning within a professional newsroom.
- Educational background in Journalism or Communications.
Location & details#
- Location: Montpelier, Vermont (On-site requirement).
- Compensation: $17–$18 per hour.
- Sponsorship: Not available.
- Academic credit: Students receiving school credit may be considered.
