About the role#
The AI Engineer Intern will work within the technology team to build and maintain production-grade AI solutions. This 15-week program focuses on engineering, requiring interns to move beyond prototypes to deploy agents and models that support customers and associates. You will work on real-world business challenges, participate in professional development sessions, and present project outcomes to senior leadership.
What you'll do#
- Collect, clean, and preprocess large datasets from various sources.
- Build AI agents in Java using Google’s Agent Development Kit (ADK), including prompt design and task orchestration.
- Develop Spring Boot microservices that expose agents and models to downstream applications through REST APIs.
- Perform exploratory data analysis to uncover trends and insights.
- Implement retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques, including document chunking and vector search.
- Build batch and streaming data pipelines using Java.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate data insights into actionable recommendations.
- Evaluate agent behavior by building test cases to measure accuracy, latency, and cost.
- Apply responsible AI practices, including PII handling and hallucination mitigation.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Canadian university or college co-op program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- Strong programming fundamentals in Java (17 or later), including object-oriented design and data structures.
- Experience building server-side applications and REST APIs, ideally with Spring Boot.
- Familiarity with a JVM build tool such as Maven or Gradle and unit testing with JUnit.
- Proficiency with Git, GitHub, and SQL for data retrieval.
- Working knowledge of LLM application fundamentals, including prompting and retrieval-augmented generation.
- A portfolio of projects, such as GitHub repositories, hackathons, or research contributions.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to explain technical decisions to non-technical audiences.

- Modality: On-site (Monday to Friday).
- Term: Fall 2026 (September 8 to December 18, 2026).
