The Family Centre of Northern Alberta is seeking ten interns for the May 2027 to December 2027 term. This program supports students completing clinical requirements for a Master’s degree in Counselling, Clinical Social Work, Psychology, or a related field. Interns provide individual, couple, family, and group therapy through the Drop-In Single-Session Counselling (DISSC) program and subsidized ongoing therapy, with potential opportunities to work in schools.
What you'll do#
- Provide counselling services to adults, couples, families, and minors to support healing and meet therapeutic goals.
- Establish and maintain trusting relationships with clients using sound therapeutic techniques.
- Assist clients in connecting with community resources.
- Advocate for clients who are unable to do so themselves and help clients learn self-advocacy skills.
- Complete administrative tasks accurately and on time.
- Videotape client sessions for clinical supervision purposes.
- Attend individual, group, and consultation supervision meetings.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s Degree program in Counselling, Clinical Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Proficiency with computer tools including Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and online databases.
- Strong attention to detail, time management skills, and established self-care practices.
- Experience in face-to-face work with vulnerable adults, children, or families is considered an asset.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Requirements include a Police Information Check (Vulnerable Sector), a Child Intervention Records Check, ASIST Suicide Intervention Training (or equivalent), and completion of the Trans Wellness Initiative Introduction to Affirming Spaces Training.
Location & details#
- Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
- Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: 20+ hours per week for 8 to 10 consecutive months.
- Term: Summer 2027 start (May 2027).
- Note: This is an unpaid internship.
