NHL Student Intern, Fall 2026

About the role#

The Athletic is seeking an NHL Student Intern for the fall of 2026. This 12-week program, running from September to December, embeds the intern within the NHL department’s News, Enterprise, and Trending team. The role focuses on contributing to hockey coverage across the league’s 32 teams through both quick-turn assignments and deep-dive projects.

What you'll do#

• Write NHL breaking news stories.
• Pitch, report, write, and fact-check hockey stories.
• Adhere to The Athletic’s editorial standards.
• Attend regular editorial meetings and collaborate with NHL editors and reporters on ideas and assignments.
• Edit and publish hockey stories.

What you'll need#

• Undergraduate student status, ideally in your junior or senior year, or a recent graduate.
• A journalism background with an understanding of how newsrooms operate.
• Deep knowledge of and passion for hockey.
• Ability to work a 30–40 hour work week, including nights and weekends.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Location & details#

• This is a remote internship based in the United States.
• The position may require some travel to Chicago or New York City.
• Candidates based in New York City have the option to work on-site in the office.
• This is a paid internship at a rate of $20 USD per hour.
