Land Intern

About the role#

The Land Intern will support the VA Southeast Division in Newport News, Virginia. This full-time, paid internship offers exposure to the land development process, from initial feasibility studies to active construction site oversight. Candidates should be currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Business Administration, Real Estate, Environmental Engineering, Architecture, or Urban Planning and be within one year of graduation.

What you'll do#

• Participate in field oversight activities for site development and lot delivery.
• Monitor project progress and construction activities by working with civil contractors, consultants, and trade partners.
• Coordinate with local inspectors, municipal representatives, and jurisdictional staff throughout the development lifecycle.
• Assist with land development budget tracking and cost management.
• Conduct market research and feasibility studies for potential land acquisitions.
• Analyze zoning and regulatory requirements and assist with due diligence activities.
• Develop an understanding of development schedules, construction sequencing, and project execution.
• Participate in onsite meetings regarding safety, contractor coordination, and project execution.
• Gain familiarity with permitting requirements, compliance procedures, and site safety protocols.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program with a successful academic record.
• Expected graduation within one year.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with a focus on Excel and Teams.
• Ability to work collaboratively across internal and cross-functional teams.
• A self-starting attitude with a focus on attention to detail.
