The Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA is seeking a Social Media Marketing Intern to support our digital presence and share the stories of the animals and people we serve. This role provides hands-on experience in nonprofit marketing and fundraising communications within a mission-driven environment. You will work closely with the Director of Development to create content that supports our adoption, foster, and community programs.
What you'll do#
- Capture photo and video content of shelter animals, staff, volunteers, events, and daily life at the shelter using a smartphone or DSLR.
- Edit and optimize media for Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, including cropping, color correction, and motion edits.
- Build short-form videos featuring adoptable animals, behind-the-scenes moments, and success stories.
- Draft captions and copy that reflect the RHSPCA voice to encourage engagement and support.
- Maintain a content calendar and schedule posts across social platforms.
- Monitor comments and messages, flagging questions or concerns to staff.
- Brainstorm visual concepts and story angles aligned with current campaigns and fundraising initiatives.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in or recent graduation from a program in marketing, communications, journalism, digital media, or a related field.
- Proficiency with major social platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
- Experience using photo and video editing tools such as Canva, CapCut, or Adobe Express.
- Strong writing skills with a focus on tone, grammar, and clarity.
- A genuine interest in animal welfare and comfort working in a shelter environment around animals.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
- Ability to lift 35 lbs. and work in an environment that may include loud noises or exposure to cleaning chemicals.
Location & details#
- Location: Rockingham, Virginia.
- Term: Summer 2026 (3-month duration).
- Modality: Hybrid. This position requires approximately 16 hours per week, including one 8-hour on-site day per week for content capture and one 8-hour remote day for editing and planning.
- Compensation: $750 per month.
