As a PhD Machine Learning Intern in the Advanced Technology Group, you will engage in the full spectrum of ML product development. You will work on cutting-edge technologies for visual understanding and recommender systems, with opportunities to deploy features to millions of users or conduct research suitable for paper submissions. This is a 12-week, full-time paid internship running from September 21 to December 11, 2026.
What you'll do#
- Develop and launch new user features using internal datasets and techniques in recommendation systems, computer vision, representation learning, generative AI, and responsible AI.
- Gain hands-on experience with production ML systems, covering algorithmic research, infrastructure, data engineering, training, and inference.
- Leverage AI tools and agents to accelerate prototyping, experimentation, and engineering implementation.
- Validate AI-generated outputs through testing and code review to ensure performance, security, and maintainability.
- Contribute to research applicable to Pinterest engineering challenges.
- Write clean, efficient, and sustainable code while taking proactive ownership of project quality with minimal guidance.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, NLP, Statistics, Information Sciences, or a related field.
- Mastery of at least one systems language (Java, C++, or Python) and one ML framework (TensorFlow, PyTorch, or MLFlow).
- Proficiency in AI-native engineering and the design of agent-friendly codebases.
- Strong critical thinking skills for validating AI-generated suggestions and solving complex analytical problems.
- Experience in research and a passion for applied machine learning.

- Locations: San Francisco, CA; Palo Alto, CA; Seattle, WA; or New York, NY.
- Work Modality: Remote or hybrid, depending on the specific team assignment.
- Duration: 12 weeks (September 21 – December 11, 2026).
- Compensation: $12,100 monthly.
