About the role#
As a SMOC Intern, you will maintain the stability and reliability of critical technology services by monitoring alerts, triaging incidents, and supporting operational processes. You will work alongside experienced team members to gain hands-on exposure to enterprise monitoring tools and incident management practices. This is a 6-month fixed-term opportunity with the potential to convert to full-time employment.
What you'll do#
- Monitor alerts and triage incidents in the Security & Monitoring Operations Centre.
- Perform shift start procedures, including health checks and reviewing handover logs.
- Acknowledge PagerDuty alerts within the service level agreement and begin triage immediately.
- Follow documented runbooks to triage incidents and adjust priorities based on business impact.
- Facilitate a rapid response during major incidents by initiating appropriate processes, such as opening incident bridge calls and engaging on-call resources.
- Document incident timelines, findings, and actions accurately.
- Complete shift handover logs and confirm status with the incoming operator.
What you'll need#
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Basic knowledge of scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python) for automation and alert setup.
- Familiarity with monitoring and incident management tools such as Datadog, PagerDuty, or ServiceNow.
- Foundational understanding of networking concepts, operating systems (Windows, Linux), and security principles.
- Ability to follow structured runbooks and documented procedures with strong attention to detail.
- Strong analytical skills and clear written and verbal communication.
Location & details#
- Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
- Work Modality: Hybrid.
- Schedule: The schedule includes weekday shifts and one weekend day per week. Most shifts are 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM, with occasional weekday shifts from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Flexibility to work daytime and evening hours is required.
- Compensation: Approximately $27-$28 per hour.
