The Transportation Planning Intern provides professional and technical support to the Transportation Planning & Engineering Division. This position offers students practical experience in metropolitan transportation planning, geographic information systems (GIS), data collection, and public engagement. Under the guidance of professional staff, the intern assists with projects that advance regional planning initiatives.
What you'll do#
- Update and maintain GIS databases and geospatial information.
- Create GIS maps for technical analysis, reports, and public meetings.
- Collect, organize, validate, and analyze quantitative data.
- Prepare charts, graphs, dashboards, and visualizations to communicate technical information.
- Assist with field work, including the deployment and monitoring of transportation data collection equipment.
- Prepare materials and provide logistical support for stakeholder and public meetings.
- Maintain project files and document action items from technical committee meetings.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Urban or Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, Geography, GIS, Public Administration, or Environmental Studies.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or other GIS software is preferred.
- Basic understanding of transportation planning principles and multimodal systems.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prepare clear maps, graphics, and technical documents.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

- Physical requirements: Ability to work in an office environment and perform field work, including occasional lifting of up to 35 pounds and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
