Utility Operator in Training (Summer Student)

About the role#

Nexus Water Group is seeking a Summer Utility Operator in Training to support water and wastewater utility operations. Reporting to the Area Supervisor, this role involves operating water analysis and treatment equipment to ensure systems meet regulatory, environmental, and safety standards. This is a full-time, on-site summer contract position.

What you'll do#

• Assist in daily inspections, monitoring, and maintenance of water and wastewater utility systems.
• Perform routine maintenance on pumps, blowers, motors, and related equipment.
• Create and maintain detailed logs regarding inspections and maintenance activities.
• Collect water and wastewater samples daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Assist in repairs to small irrigation and water lines, as well as the replacement of water meters.
• Perform additional duties as required to support the safe and reliable operation of utility systems.

What you'll need#

• Post-secondary education or training in Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection, or Wastewater Treatment.
• A valid Alberta Driver's License and a current driver's abstract.
• Competency in MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to maintain accurate records and update plans.
• Preferred experience includes field work in plumbing, electrical, or mechanical trades, as well as experience in construction, fusion, geothermal, geo-exchange, and fire hydrant maintenance.
• Knowledge of inspecting sewer collection systems, lift stations, water distribution systems, and valves is considered an asset.

• Term: Summer 2026.
• Schedule: This position requires availability for shift work, including potential weekend scheduling and after-hours on-call support. Some travel may be required.
