    About the role#

    The Archivist Assistant is a one-year internship opportunity for a recent graduate beginning their career in archives, records management, or cultural heritage. Based in the Powley Institute, this role supports the preservation, organization, and accessibility of materials reflecting the history, governance, and cultural life of the Métis Nation of Ontario. You will work under the supervision of the Archivist to gain hands-on experience in archival processing, digitization, and community-focused stewardship.

    What you'll do#

    • Support the processing of archival materials, including sorting, arranging, and labeling records for long-term preservation.
    • Assist with the creation of descriptive metadata and finding aids to improve access and discoverability.
    • Participate in digitization activities such as scanning, file naming, and quality control.
    • Provide front-line reference and research support for staff, researchers, and community members while upholding privacy and cultural protocols.
    • Monitor the physical condition of archival materials and support basic preservation tasks.
    • Maintain accurate documentation of archival activities, including accession records and digital file inventories.
    • Assist with community outreach, workshops, and events that promote engagement with the collection.

    What you'll need#

    • A College Diploma.
    • Less than 1 year of experience in a relevant field.
    • Foundational knowledge of archival principles and practices, such as appraisal, arrangement, and description.
    • Experience providing customer service, research assistance, or front-line support.
    • Experience working with digital tools and information systems, including data entry and file management.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to handle archival materials safely while following preservation guidelines and cultural protocols.
    • Education in a relevant field of study, such as History, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Media Studies, Anthropology, Political Science, or Communications.
    • Must be a citizen of the Métis Nation of Ontario and have graduated within the last year.
