The Language Services Unit at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office provides interpretation and translation services to support the investigation and prosecution of criminal cases. As an intern, you will work under supervision to provide bi-directional translation and interpretation between English and Spanish. This role requires mature and tactful behavior, as you will assist with sensitive legal materials and in-person interviews.
What you'll do#
- Interpret verbally and translate written communication between English and Spanish.
- Provide interpretation for phone and video conferences, community presentations, and in-person interviews.
- Prepare written translations of legal documents, personal statements, press releases, and general correspondence.
- Screen Spanish audio recordings and produce accurate transcriptions and translations.
- Proofread translations and provide feedback to ensure accuracy.
- Process language service requests and update the unit database.
- Support team members with translation and interpretation assignments as directed.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a junior or senior in college, or in a graduate program. Preference is given to students in translation or interpretation programs.
- Strong bi-cultural awareness and the ability to speak, write, and use idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms in both English and Spanish.
- Ability to maintain maturity and professionalism when handling sensitive information.
Location & details#
- Location: New York, NY (On-site).
- Term: Fall 2026 (October 19, 2026 – December 11, 2026).
- Schedule: Two days a week, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm.
- Compensation: $17.50 - $18.00 per hour.
