Student Patient Care Technician

About the role#

This Student Patient Care Technician position is designed for students currently pursuing a pre-healthcare track, such as nursing, health administration, or biomedical sciences. This is a supplemental, paid position providing direct patient-care exposure with a requirement of 24 hours every 6 weeks.

What you'll do#

As a bedside caregiver, you will assist the primary RN and charge nurse to ensure a high-quality patient experience. Responsibilities include:

• Providing drinks and assisting with meal ordering.
• Encouraging patient mobility and assisting with baths.
• Providing clinical support by obtaining vital signs and reporting abnormalities or behavioral changes to the nursing staff.
• Ensuring patient safety by utilizing measures such as gait belts and alarms.
• Maintaining a caring bedside manner while working in a clinical environment.

What you'll need#

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the AHA or ability to obtain it upon completion of the IU Health PCA education program.
• Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients.
• Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to exercise judgment and initiative to resolve problems.
• Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software, and standards related to patient care activities.
• Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitive movements.

Location & details#

• Location: Indianapolis, Indiana.
• Term: Summer 2026.
• Work Modality: On-site.
• Schedule: Must be available Monday through Friday after 3:00 PM and/or any time on weekends.
• Float Requirement: Must be willing to rotate between Methodist Hospital and University Hospital.
