Intern, Political Affairs

About the role#

Humane World for Animals is seeking a Political Affairs Intern for the Fall 2026 term. This role offers exposure to federal and state-level animal protection advocacy, including voter outreach, candidate surveying, and public education on animal welfare issues. This is a paid, part-time, hybrid position based in Washington, DC.

What you'll do#

• Research political candidates, their legislative records, and their backgrounds in animal advocacy.
• Coordinate the distribution of candidate questionnaires.
• Compile data regarding political spending and activity.
• Draft content, including letters to the editor and press lists, to support media relations.
• Plan and participate in state PAC fundraising efforts.
• Conduct voter outreach to support candidates at the state and federal levels.
• Respond to member inquiries regarding PAC operations, candidate relations, and animal welfare issues.
• Prepare an optional end-of-semester project focused on a political communications strategy.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduation within the last two years.
• Strong interest in animal protection issues, government, and politics.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, along with strong online research skills.
• Ability to exercise discretion when handling confidential information.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
• Ability to work independently and maintain professional communication with staff and the public.

• Term: Fall 2026 (August 30, 2026 – November 19, 2026)
• Schedule: 16 hours per week
• Compensation: $18.55 per hour
