Great Gray Trust Company is seeking a Legal & Compliance Extern for the Fall 2026 semester. This part-time, unpaid externship provides law students with hands-on experience in the legal and compliance functions of a retirement fund trustee. You will support a large-scale governance documentation project, working closely with attorneys, compliance professionals, and business partners to gain insight into fiduciary, regulatory, and operational issues affecting collective investment funds.
What you'll do#
- Assist with the review, revision, and updating of collective investment fund governance documents and related legal records.
- Draft, edit, and proofread legal documents, governance materials, and internal memoranda.
- Review documents for consistency, accuracy, and compliance with organizational standards.
- Organize, track, and maintain legal documents, templates, and governance records.
- Participate in meetings with Legal and Compliance personnel and assist with follow-up action items.
- Collaborate with attorneys, compliance professionals, and business partners on governance-related projects.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a J.D. or LL.M candidate at an accredited law school.
- Eligibility to participate in and receive academic credit through your law school's externship or field placement program.
- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience drafting, reviewing, or editing legal documents is strongly preferred.
- Coursework in Contracts, Business Organizations, Corporate Law, Securities Regulation, or Investment Management is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Wilmington, Delaware.
- Modality: Hybrid (4 days onsite, 1 day remote).
- Term: Fall 2026 (approximately 10 weeks, from late August/early September through late November/December).
- Commitment: Part-time, approximately 10–20 hours per week.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid externship for academic credit; candidates must satisfy their law school's requirements for credit eligibility.
- Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
