Technical Writer Intern

About the role#

Excelitas Technologies is seeking a Technical Writer Intern to support the creation and improvement of technical documentation used in optical manufacturing, training, and quality processes. This role focuses on translating day-to-day operational workflows into clear, standardized instructions for the production floor. You will work closely with technicians, engineers, and supervisors to document complex processes effectively.

What you'll do#

• Create and update work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and training documents.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand and document manufacturing processes.
• Organize and standardize documentation to ensure ease of use for production staff.
• Develop simple visuals, diagrams, and step-by-step guides to support technical content.
• Review existing documentation to ensure accuracy, consistency, and completeness while identifying process gaps.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a degree program related to Communications, English, Journalism, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
• Strong written communication skills and high attention to detail.
• Ability to learn technical processes and translate them into clear, logical instructions.
• Working proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Basic to intermediate technical writing experience.
• Experience in a lab, shop, or manufacturing environment is preferred but not required.
• Exposure to documentation control or quality systems, such as ISO 9001, is a plus.

• Location: Boulder, Colorado.
• Modality: On-site.
• Term: Summer 2026 (approximately 10 weeks).
• Status: Part-time, paid internship.
• Compensation: $24.00 per hour.
