About the role#
The District of Sparwood is seeking an Engineering/Environmental Co-op student to support municipal operations, utilities, and environmental initiatives. This full-time position is based in Sparwood, British Columbia, and offers a mix of office and field work. The role reports to the Director of Operations and involves collaboration with Engineering Services and the Utilities Crew. This is a 4-month term beginning September 7, 2026, with the potential for an 8-month extension.
What you'll do#
- Act as a Water Ambassador to support public communication regarding water conservation.
- Collect GPS data points and assist with the maintenance and updates of GIS databases.
- Develop Excel spreadsheets to support utility reporting and environmental monitoring.
- Conduct research to support improvements in water and wastewater operations, best practices, and contingency planning.
- Gain exposure to stormwater, sewer collection, and water distribution systems.
- Explore emerging technologies and assist in developing operator reference materials.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a program related to Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Urban Planning.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to operate GPS equipment and manage associated data files.
- Comfort using iPads and mobile applications.
- Knowledge of municipal infrastructure and civil engineering principles.
- A valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

- Compensation: $23.78 to $26.85 per hour, depending on the year of study completed.
