    About the role#

    The Immigration Impact Unit (IIU) of the Committee for Public Counsel Services is seeking interns for Fall 2026. This role focuses on the intersection of criminal and immigration law, supporting post-conviction relief efforts for indigent clients. This is an unpaid, full-time position requiring a minimum of 30 hours per week.

    What you'll do#

    • Support post-conviction relief work by reviewing criminal conviction records, CORIs, and immigration documents.
    • Conduct legal research on issues related to criminal and immigration law.
    • Draft post-conviction motions.
    • Argue at least one post-conviction motion in court (for students with SJC Rule 3:03 certification).

    What you'll need#

    • A demonstrated commitment to zealous advocacy and community-oriented defense.
    • Prior experience with criminal and immigration law through coursework, clinics, or internships.
    • Ability to interpret and decipher a Massachusetts criminal record (CORI).
    • Access to a personal computer with reliable home internet for remote work.
    • Access to reliable transportation or public transit for court appearances.
    • Preference for students pursuing degrees in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Public Health, Philosophy, or International Relations.

    • Modality: Hybrid schedule.
    • Term: Fall 2026.
    • Note: This position is unpaid; the agency can assist students in securing externship credit or outside funding.

    About Committee for Public Counsel Services

    The Committee for Public Counsel Services is a Massachusetts government agency based in Boston that provides legal representation to indigent individuals. A fifteen-member body oversees the organization, which manages cases in areas including criminal law, child welfare, mental health, and juvenile delinquency. The agency employs approximately 500 staff attorneys and coordinates with 3,000 certified private attorneys to deliver services across multiple specialized divisions. Legal support is provided for criminal, civil, and administrative proceedings where there is a right to counsel.
