    About the role#

    The Center for Immigrant & Refugee Advancement (CIRA) offers a Legal Externship program designed to provide 3L students from the University of Nebraska College of Law with practical, hands-on experience in immigration law. This role focuses on client-centered representation, litigation strategy, and professional development within a mission-driven, non-profit environment. This is a paid position offering $25.00 per hour, with the possibility of class credit.

    What you'll do#

    • Conduct legal research and draft legal documents.
    • Prepare and file applications for immigration relief with USCIS, Immigration Court, and other agencies.
    • Participate in client interviews and develop questions to determine relief eligibility.
    • Appear in Immigration Court and state court on behalf of clients under the supervision of a licensed attorney.
    • Navigate difficult conversations with clients regarding traumatic experiences or challenging legal decisions.
    • Maintain case management documentation and collaborate with the clinic team to meet client goals.

    What you'll need#

    • A Bachelor’s degree.
    • Enrollment as a 3L student at the University of Nebraska College of Law for the 2026-2027 academic year.
    • Qualification as a Senior-Certified law student eligible to practice under a licensed attorney.
    • A strong commitment to public interest legal services and the empowerment of immigrant communities.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
    • Proficiency in Office 365 applications and the ability to learn new software systems.
    • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and work sensitively with diverse populations.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Lincoln, Nebraska.
    • Modality: On-site.
    • Term: Fall 2026 (August 2026 – December 2026), with the possibility of extension through April 2027.
    • Hours: 15-20 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM.
    • Requirements: Ability to pass background checks and lift up to 20 lbs.

    Established in 1999, the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. The entity employs between 51 and 200 staff members to provide legal representation, resettlement assistance, and social work services to immigrants and refugees. Its operational focus includes advocacy and education regarding asylum, domestic abuse, workers rights, and family support. The organization also engages in rural capacity building to foster inclusive communities.
