The Center for Immigrant & Refugee Advancement (CIRA) offers a Legal Externship program designed to provide 3L students from the University of Nebraska College of Law with practical, hands-on experience in immigration law. This role focuses on client-centered representation, litigation strategy, and professional development within a mission-driven, non-profit environment. This is a paid position offering $25.00 per hour, with the possibility of class credit.
What you'll do#
- Conduct legal research and draft legal documents.
- Prepare and file applications for immigration relief with USCIS, Immigration Court, and other agencies.
- Participate in client interviews and develop questions to determine relief eligibility.
- Appear in Immigration Court and state court on behalf of clients under the supervision of a licensed attorney.
- Navigate difficult conversations with clients regarding traumatic experiences or challenging legal decisions.
- Maintain case management documentation and collaborate with the clinic team to meet client goals.
What you'll need#
- A Bachelor’s degree.
- Enrollment as a 3L student at the University of Nebraska College of Law for the 2026-2027 academic year.
- Qualification as a Senior-Certified law student eligible to practice under a licensed attorney.
- A strong commitment to public interest legal services and the empowerment of immigrant communities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Proficiency in Office 365 applications and the ability to learn new software systems.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and work sensitively with diverse populations.
Location & details#
- Location: Lincoln, Nebraska.
- Modality: On-site.
- Term: Fall 2026 (August 2026 – December 2026), with the possibility of extension through April 2027.
- Hours: 15-20 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM.
- Requirements: Ability to pass background checks and lift up to 20 lbs.
