About the role#
The Healthy Food Access intern will support policy research, advocacy, and coalition efforts focused on strengthening the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP), and the charitable food system. This role provides an opportunity to contribute to programs designed to meet the nutritional needs of individuals seeking food assistance.
What you'll do#
- Conduct literature reviews regarding the charitable food system and disaster food assistance.
- Monitor and track state and federal legislation related to policy priorities, including SNAP restrictions and farm to food bank initiatives.
- Research and track state evaluation plans for SNAP restriction waivers.
- Support the Nutrition, Policy, & Food Banking workgroup by coordinating speakers and conducting outreach to members.
- Assist with the planning of hill visits and in-person convenings.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a graduate degree program (master’s or doctoral) in public health, nutrition, or a related field.
- Excellent research and writing skills, with the ability to read, analyze, interpret, and summarize public health and nutrition research.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage tasks to achieve project goals.
- A strong interest in health equity, nutrition security, and food policy.
- Leadership, organizing, or community engagement experience is considered a plus.
Location & details#
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Compensation: $18.40 per hour.
- Schedule: Part-time at 10 hours per week for 10 weeks.
- Modality: Remote within the United States, with the option to work from the Washington, DC office.
- Requirements: Proof of up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination is required during onboarding.
