R&D Engineer Intern

About the role#

Canopy Technologies is seeking engineering students for an R&D Engineering Intern position for Fall 2026. This role involves working directly with experienced engineers to develop and test hardware systems for extreme environments, including hypersonic platforms and re-entry vehicles. Interns are embedded in active development programs, collaborating with engineers, technicians, and manufacturing teams to design prototypes, instrument experiments, and analyze data.

What you'll do#

• Support the development and testing of components and payload systems for high-temperature and extreme-environment applications.
• Assist with the characterization and testing of advanced materials, such as ceramics, composites, coatings, and embedded sensor systems.
• Help design and assemble experimental setups, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems.
• Collect, process, and analyze experimental data to support engineering decisions.
• Contribute to thermal, structural, or multiphysics analyses under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Assist with CAD modeling, documentation of hardware assemblies, and prototype integration.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• Practical experience applying engineering skills through laboratory work, research, engineering project teams, or personal projects.
• Familiarity with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, NX, or Fusion.
• Basic programming ability in Python, MATLAB, or similar tools for data analysis or instrumentation.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional engineering environment.
