ASML’s YieldStar Sensor Group in Wilton, CT, is seeking an Optical Engineer Co-Op for a project-based internship. This role focuses on supporting and developing optical and photonic sensor systems used within photolithography tools. The position requires a commitment of at least 6 months.
What you'll do#
- Perform optical design, tolerancing, and modeling using CodeV or Zemax.
- Conduct physical optics simulations—including wave propagation, partial coherence calculations, and polarization optics—using MATLAB, FRED, and CodeV.
- Build and align complex sensors using mechanical, collimation, and interferometry methods.
- Work with diverse optical devices and sensors, including objectives, relay optics, fibers, cameras, and detectors.
- Support the design and build of optical sensor metrology tests.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in optical engineering, physics, electrical, mechanical, computer, or biomedical engineering (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred; undergraduates with specific expertise in optical design will be considered).
- Experience with optical design and tolerancing using CodeV or equivalent software.
- Proficiency in physical optics modeling using FRED or equivalent software.
- Practical experience with optical sensor alignment using collimators, mechanical gaging, and interferometers.
- Familiarity with optical technologies such as polarization devices, relays, objectives, light sources, and detectors.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team while following strict procedures.

- Work Modality: On-site.
- Employment: Full-time, paid internship.
- Requirements: Must be willing to work in a clean room environment wearing required protective gear (coveralls, hoods, booties, safety glasses, and gloves). This position requires access to controlled technology under U.S. Export Administration Regulations.
