The Disability Data Fellow will support the development and maintenance of the Disability Data Archive, an initiative partnered with Microsoft to preserve and expand access to disability-related datasets. This 12-month fellowship focuses on collating and publishing data from federal and state agencies to create a public-facing portal for researchers, policymakers, and the disability community. The role is grounded in principles of disability justice and participatory data practices, aiming to ensure long-term accessibility and transparency of critical information.
What you'll do#
- Identify, source, and catalog disability-related datasets from federal, state, and other public sources.
- Monitor datasets at risk of removal, alteration, or reduced accessibility and support preservation efforts.
- Clean, standardize, and organize datasets for publication and long-term use.
- Develop metadata, documentation, and data dictionaries to improve usability.
- Design the architecture for the public-facing archive and open-data portal.
- Conduct quality assurance checks to ensure data integrity and consistency.
- Assist with literature reviews and research related to disability data ecosystems.
- Collaborate with internal staff, Microsoft partners, researchers, and external stakeholders to inform archive workflows.
- Contribute to reports, presentations, and written materials regarding the initiative.
What you'll need#
- Demonstrated experience working on disability rights and justice.
- Experience with data management in a professional, academic, advocacy, or research setting.
- Experience with the development or maintenance of SQL cloud database infrastructure.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as SQL, Python, C#, or JavaScript.
- Advanced data management skills using Excel.
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A commitment to disability inclusion, accessibility, and equity.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, remote position.
- The role is a fixed-term 12-month fellowship with the possibility of extension based on funding.
- Candidates with backgrounds in Data Science, Computer Science, Public Health, Sociology, Political Science, Human Resources, Psychology, or Communications are encouraged to apply.
