About the role#
The American Association for the Advancement of Science is seeking a News Writer Intern to join the news team. This is a full-time, paid internship running from January through June 2027. You will report to the Online News Editor and contribute to both the daily online news site and the magazine.
What you'll do#
- Write for the daily online news site, covering science and science policy in stories typically ranging from 600 to 800 words.
- Draft longer news articles and potentially feature stories for the magazine.
- Pitch your own story ideas in addition to completing assigned reporting.
- Potentially travel to conduct on-site reporting or cover scientific meetings.
What you'll need#
- A bachelor’s degree or status as a college senior. An advanced degree or certification is preferred.
- Experience writing about complex science in a clear, compelling, and user-friendly way for a broad audience.
- A demonstrated ability to report and write under tight deadlines.
- Preference is given to applicants with published articles in high-profile news outlets, previous journalism or science writing experience, or completion of a relevant writing program.
- A background in science is preferred but not required.
Location & details#
- This position is based in Washington, DC. While on-site work is strongly preferred, remote work may be available in select states where the organization has a business presence.
- Compensation is $21.00 per hour.
