The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) offers a 12-month Student-at-Law program within the Law department. This role supports the development of a law graduate into a practicing lawyer, focusing on regulatory and commercial matters related to the planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. The position involves working collaboratively with internal colleagues to ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory obligations.
What you'll do#
- Support legal counsel in providing verbal and written legal advice on commercial and regulatory issues.
- Conduct legal research and draft memoranda to communicate findings.
- Assist in the drafting and development of AESO authoritative documents, guidance documents, and training materials.
- Provide support in preparing for and executing stakeholder consultation sessions.
- Assist with the AESO’s participation in regulatory proceedings before the Alberta Utilities Commission and litigation files.
- Contribute to the development of a knowledge management database of legal and regulatory opinions.
- Develop an understanding of the AESO mandate, relevant legislation, government policies, and industry issues.
What you'll need#
- A Bachelor of Laws or a Juris Doctor Degree from a faculty of common law at a Canadian university or an equivalent qualification.
- Eligibility to article as a Student-at-Law in the Province of Alberta as of May 2027.
- Strong legal research skills and computer literacy.
- Previous related work or volunteer experience is considered an asset.
Location & details#
- Location: Calgary, Alberta.
- Work Modality: Hybrid (In-office Tuesday through Thursday; flexible Mondays and Fridays).
- Term: 12-month program with a flexible start date between May and September 2027.
- Compensation: This is a paid position including salary, benefits, and reimbursement of Law Society fees.
- Additional Support: Continuation of salary while attending CPLED modules; potential rotation through a law firm or administrative tribunal.
